Welcome to the Long Island Greenways and Healthy Trails (LIGHT)!
LI Greenways and Healthy Trails was founded in 2007 with the goal of creating a vast network of interconnected trail systems on LI so there would be safe choices for everyone to reach just about all destinations on LI on foot or on bicycle. The effort includes getting the various off road paved paths built and opened to the public, as well as getting more on road improvements such as bike lanes and other enhancements to reach these trails and to support constructing them where off road trails are not possible or feasible. We also will support the creation of more mountain bicycling trails and hiking trails where feasible.
We will be listing various trail projects as they develop. We will need folks to support the trail in various ways, sometimes a simple letter writing campaign is a good way to draw attention to a stalled project. For now, read about the Long Island Motor Parkway Trail:
LI Motor Parkway Goes Green
Once the exclusive domain of the automobile, the former Long Island Motor Parkway could become a greenway where cars would ironically be banned.
There is a plan to create a major east-west recreational trail using the original motor parkway route. This non-motorized shared use trail will have at least thirty miles of off road travel available. It will become a long distance car free connection between Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties.
This proposed corridor will link together many businesses, shopping and residential centers such as the Nassau Hub, the Melville Corridor and the new development at the former Pilgrim State Hospital.
In Queens, the route is already a bike path that connects Cunningham Park and Alley Pond Park. By continuing west, the path could tie together Eisenhower Park, Bethpage State Park and the Edgewood Preserve in Commack.
Reducing traffic and our dependence on cars is a healthy alternative for our Long Island environment. It is also a great way to encourage a healthy life style as people find how easy and safe it is to get daily exercise by riding their bicycles, jogging or walking away from the dangers of the highways. The end result will be a higher quality of life for Long Island residents.
The time has come to make safe, traffic free travel available for bicyclists and pedestrians. People will be able to use bicycles to commute to work and go shopping. Children will have safe routes to schools, playgrounds and parks.
Is this something you're interested in? Are you ready to take action? The Long Island Motor Parkway Trail Group is looking for people to support this plan and help keep this project moving forward. A little help can make a big difference.
Be part of history, help make LI a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly place.
